ICLEI Southeast Asia Members elect new RexCom; Seberang Perai mayor is new global representative

Seberang Perai (Malaysia) Municipal President Maimunah Mohd Sharif has been elected to the ICLEI Global Executive Committee (GexCom) by her peers at the ICLEI Southeast Asia Regional Executive Committee (RexCom), a few weeks after the members of the RexCom were elected by ICLEI Members across the region.

Ms. Maimunah was selected by Mayor Hugua of Wakatobi Regency, Indonesia, and City Budget Officer Leticia Clemente of Baguio City, Philippines, in a decision made known on December 11. Ms. Maimunah, Mayor. Hugua, and Ms. Clemente were elected to the RexCom via a balloting process that ran from September through November last year, besting three other candidates.

Mayor Somjai Suwansupana of Phuket, Thailand, a member of the outgoing RexCom, retains a special advisory role. The new RexCom shall serve a three-year term beginning in 2015 until 2018.

In an email sent to ICLEI Southeast Asia Secretariat (ICLEI SEAS) following word of her selection, Maimunah wrote: “Thank you very much for the news. Let us work together to have a better world to live in for us, and for our future generations. Let’s join hands and move forward to achieve the objectives of ICLEI.”

ICLEI SEAS Regional Director Victorino Aquitania welcomed Maimunah’s election, as well as the election of the three new RexCom members. “We are looking forward to working closely with the new RexCom and with our global representative, Madam Maimunah, in bringing in more local governments in the region along the path of sustainability,” he said. “We are pleased with the composition of the new RexCom, which represented one of our oldest and most active Members, Baguio City, as well as two of our newest Members in Wakatobi Regency and Seberang Perai. We are likewise glad to keep Mayor Somjai aboard, who is known internationally as an advocate for sustainability.”

Other than Ms. Somjai, the outgoing 2012-2015 RexCom members are Quezon City (Philippines) Mayor Herbert Bautista, who chaired the RexCom; Ms. Mary Jane Ortega, who was elected by the GexCom and concurrently served as ICLEI Vice President; and Mr. Purnomo Dwi Sasongko, who heads the Regional Planning and Infrastructure Development Division of the Development and Planning and Board of Semarang City, Indonesia.
