ICLEI Member Seberang Perai Municipal Council (Majlis Perbandaran Seberang Perai, MPSP), in partnership with ICLEI Southeast Asia Secretariat (ICLEI SEAS), held a two-day Climate Change Training at the Sunway Hotel in Seberang Perai, Malaysia, on April 18-19.

The activity is part of ICLEI SEAS’ support to MPSP under the Compact of Mayors, to which Dato' Maimunah Mohd Sharif, MPSP President and Southeast Asia Representative to the ICLEI Global Executive Committee, committed last year.

The Compact of Mayors commits cities to reduce local greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, enhance resilience to climate change, and track their progress publicly. It was launched in 2014 by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and his Special Envoy for Cities and Climate Change, Michael R. Bloomberg, under the leadership of ICLEI, C40, and the United Cities and Local Governments, with support from UN HABITAT. A growing number of Southeast Asian cities, most recently in Thailand and Indonesia, have committed to this global initiative.

As part of its commitment to the Compact, MPSP intends to conduct a community-scale GHG inventory to measure and identify GHG emission sources in the city. Training participants from different departments of the municipal council were introduced to the basics of climate change mitigation and adaptation by ICLEI SEAS.

The training kicked off with a discussion about ICLEI, the Compact of Mayors, and as the necessary steps that MPSP needs to accomplish in order to achieve full compliance with the Compact. Other discussion topics included the basics of GHG inventory, sources of GHG emissions, as well as climate projections for Malaysia.

The training also introduced the carbonn Climate Registry (cCR), the reporting platform of the Compact of Mayors. Compact signatories are encouraged to report their commitments, actions, and performance through the platform.

Prior to the training, ICLEI SEAS staff made a courtesy call to Dato' Maimunah, who expressed her gratitude to ICLEI for this knowledge-sharing and capacity-building activity. She highlighted that sustainable development is one of Seberang Perai’s top priorities and that signing the Compact of Mayors was a step in the right direction towards achieving that goal.
